The Saatchi Gallery is slated to display an installation work created by the Iranian artist Shirin Sabahi in the British capital of London.
The event is part of the 2011 Contemporary Art Prize (CAP) granted to her by the Iranian art center Magic of Persia at London's Royal College of Art.
The winner of MOP CAP, a global biennale organized by the UK-based charity foundation Magic of Persia, is awarded a solo exhibition at a leading art institution in the following year. According to the Magic of Persia website, the work by Sabahi which has been selected to be showcased at Saatchi Gallery is a continuous slide projection installation with sound and color. “My work addresses the materiality of time by exploring representations of the past in the present moment fabricated in circulating photographic and filmic images,†Sabahi said about her installation The 28-year-old artist’s work will be displayed during an exhibition from October 9 to 14, 2012. Born in 1984 in Tehran, Shirin Sabahi uses image as the primary material in her works, and text as the interlocutor of ideas embedded in the image. Her works cover a wide range of forms from video and slide projection installations to collages, artist books and movie subtitles. In her artistic practice, she addresses interpretations and identifications encouraged by language and image in relation to different temporalities, employing translation and transformation and playing with formats and rituals of fabricating and perceiving art and in a broader sense meaning.
The first of its kind, the Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize (MOP CAP) is a global search for the next generation of contemporary Iranian visual artists. The central goal of the prize is to provide an opportunity for gifted artists to gain international exposure, and through doing this, make a notable contribution to the long-term advancement of Iranian arts and culture worldwide.
