Tehran, May 23, 2011: An exhibition on contemporary Islamic art, by Iranian and Arab artists, is being held at Michael Berger gallery in New York City, the US.
Tehran, May 23, 2011: An exhibition on contemporary Islamic art, by Iranian and Arab artists, is being held at Michael Berger gallery in New York City, the US.
Mounted by an Arab organizer, Reem Alalusi, the exhibit features the works of nine artists, including five Iranians -- Negar Ahkami, Shiva Ahmadi, Shoja Azari, Amir Fallah and Farah Osouli.
Entitled Dis(Locating)Culture, the exhibition focuses on contemporary Islamic art as a conduit to modify understanding the Islamic culture and the image of Islam which has been distorted by western media.
My Bird, Your Cage, from cage series, created by Osouli in 2008, is one of the Iranian works in the exhibition that has not previously been displayed in Iran, ISNA reported.
Osouli asserted that the works of Iranian artists are particularly different from those of other artists at the exhibition.
“Iranian artists give different views in their works. Adapting the art of Iran thematically, Arab artists mostly pay attention to the form and appearance, rather than the content,†she said.
Alalusi said the show "bridges the gap of intercultural perception and understanding perfectly from the standpoint of showcasing the diversity of works included under the banner of contemporary Islamic art."
The showcase, which has been well received by the public, will run until July 30.
