“From No. 37â€, a documentary that explores the life of the Iranian author Sadeq Hedayat, was screened at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London on Tuesday.
“This film takes a profound and compelling look at his life from his childhood in Iran, his life in France until his suicide in Paris in the form of dialogues by presenting documents and photos. Even if you do not know Hedayat and are not interested in Iran’s literature, you will be absorbed by his Kafka-like characteristics in the film,†comments the SOAS Centre for Iranian Studies, which is the organizer of the screening, said. The screening was followed by a speech by Homa Katouzian of the University of Oxford and a Q&A session. Directed by Sam Kalantari and Mohsen Shahrnazdar in 2010, the 68-minute film was screened at the Iranian Artists Forum in Tehran in February. Hedayat (1903-1951) was influenced by world literature, especially European literature, and read the works of Kafka, Poe, and Dostoyevsky. He committed suicide in Paris. His works have been translated into many languages and “The Blind Owl†is considered among the ten most important works in world surrealist literature.
