Iranian artists and gallery owners say that economic sanctions are not affecting Iranian art sales
Iranian painters are making a killing with their canvas wall art as they enjoy booming sales and interest in their work. The artists are benefiting from sales at international auction houses such as Christie’s despite economic sanctions hitting their country. Artworks by Iranian painters are selling for good prices not only from foreign buyers but also from buyers coming from inside Iran where countless people are suffering from economic hardships.
Most Iranian citizens fear what the future brings with utility and food costs constantly rising. Even middle-class families are feeling the pinch of soaring grocery bills and rent while salaries stay the same. Iran’s economy has been suffering from the effects of sanctions imposed by the West due to Iran’s nuclear activities.
Despite Iran’s problems, their artists still enjoy the people’s insatiable appetite for their canvas wall art in different mediums and prices. There are over 12 important galleries that carry Iranian artworks.
Alireza Sami Azar, an Iranian art analyst said that the changing attitudes toward art boosted the current market trends focused on Iranian paintings. Azar said he expects the current boom to keep growing.
Working in a modern office, Alireza Sami Azar, an Iranian art analyst, says the change in attitudes toward art has largely contributed to the current market boom for paintings, which he expects to continue to grow.
The art boom in Iran began in 2006 after Christie’s and other major auction houses visited Iran. Gallery owners and artists say that the economic sanctions has had very little effect on Iranian canvas wall art sales.
