7/5/2011 Wiltshire Hosts UK+s Vastest Tree
|
The Branches of the Vast 250-Year-Old Tree Are Completely Unsupported. |
|
Tehran, June 11, 2011: A new research has revealed that an Oriental plane which was planted in Wiltshire in the 18th century is the "most spreading" tree in the UK.
Planted by master landscape gardener Lancelot "Capability" Brown at Corsham Court in 1760, the tree is the size of a football pitch with an average spread of 64 meters.
According to a study by the Tree Register of the British Isles, the tree is the vastest in the UK and has the "largest single spread," the state-funded BBC reported.
From among 200,000 of UK+s most "superlative" trees, the Wiltshire Oriental plane was found to be so vast that its lowest branches rested on the ground and some had taken root.
"Several trees rest their branches on the ground, but it+s the most impressive of these and it+s the most spreading tree that we know of," said Owen Johnson from the Tree Register.
"It extends in each direction with branches like elephant trunks snaking across the ground - it+s a very confusing tree."
The plane originated in the Middle East and was planted as a specimen at the privately-owned stately home.
"It+s a massive tree with long horizontal branches which have no supports at all," said current occupant of Corsham Court James Methuen-Campbell.
"It+s extraordinary that it+s standing without falling down.
"We recruited a tree surgeon a few years ago who suggested taking 3m off all the branches around the tree for health and safety.
"But it+s such a huge, old tree I wanted to leave it to age naturally."
