Shahram Nazeri, a vocalist and master of Iranian and Kurdish music and Hassan Alizadeh, a composer and player of traditional instruments ‘Tar’ and ‘Setar’, will get together after the lapse of some 24 years to perform a concert in Tehran during July 27-30 as part of the musical ensemble ‘Doosti’ (friendship).
Members of Doosti ensemble includes previous members of Kanoon-e Chavosh who have come together after some two decades but this time accompanied by some new towering figures of traditional Iranian music.
Nazeri, 62, Alizadeh, 60 on the kamancheh, Saeed Farajpour on the violin and kamancheh, Ardeshir Kamkar on the tar, setar and lute and Mohammad Firouzi are the five past members of Chavosh group. Ood (reed) player Siyamak Jahangiri, player of tambourine and percussionist, Behnam Samani and player of tonbak (principle percussion instrument of traditional Persian music) and tambourine, Pejhman Haddadi are the newcomers to Doosti ensemble.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Nazeri said in the past year he tried along with Alizadeh to revive Chavosh group within the framework of Doosti ensemble.
He underlined that the ensemble is determined to continue the road it set out on.
Young Musicians Welcomed
“Doosti ensemble is open to its old members and great figures of Persian music, whose artistic career is still active. The band also welcomes younger musicians who perform music at a high level,†he noted.
Social problems and obstacles in the music sector have led to growing separations among artists thus weakening the sense of kindness, friendship and artistic good intentions, he said.
“At the time when social conditions in the world somehow propagate violence and indifference towards culture and arts, the artists should join together and create works depicting love and devotion which the audience would truly enjoy. The reason why some musical pieces of the past have remained attractive to the public is that they were created with love and sincerity. However, at present many musical works are not as durable as those in the past because they do not stem from love and affection,†Nazeri pointed out.
He recalled that traditional Persian music, despite many shortfalls, has not distanced itself from mainstream social considerations, but remains alive only due to the individual endeavors of artists.
“Some of the performances of Doosti ensemble use modern Iranian poetry and improvisations are also pursued while performing. The selection of poems reflects the governing social mood. In essence, modern poetry establishes a link between traditional music and … the contemporary society,†he said.
Alizadeh told the same press conference that members of Chavosh ensemble have become independent for a long time and each of them are viewed as distinguished artists in Persian music.
“For a long time now the spirit friendship does not prevail in the society as is the case in the music sector and the society is indeed fed up with discords. Of course, this does not just pertain to state organizations and each and every member of the society, including artists, play a role in making friendships and forging cordiality,†he added.
He recalled that members of Doosti ensemble will continue their independent musical programs, but they will get together at least once a year for a concert.
Contemporary Poems
“Traditional Persian music has perpetually been accompanied by traditional poems, but we have decided to perform traditional music based on contemporary poems. Of course, this may to some extent be beyond the realm of traditional music, but we will definitely maintain its Persian nature. In the upcoming concert, we will perform some of the old musical pieces which Chavosh group performed in the past and which people still remember. I must also say that a section of the concert will deal with new works. The sense of common understanding is prevalent among members of Doosti ensemble and in our performances we are neither vocalist- or composer-oriented,†said Alizadeh.
Also at the same event, Kamkar said it is a good feeling that members of Chavosh ensemble will get together after many years and we have all reached the conclusion that better results will be obtained in light of unity among musicians.
The concert will be performed in Milad hall of Tehran International Fairgrounds.
