Sangshekanan Cave, the largest manmade cave of the world in Jahrom, was recently registered on the National Heritage List.
It is high time officials pay more attention to this cave and establish facilities needed for promoting tourism, Mehr News Agency reported.
The cave is situated southwest of Jahrom, which is 185 km from Shiraz.
Local residents and experts maintain that the cave dates back to about 600 years. The cave is about 40,000 square meters in area and its height averages three meters.
Sangshekanan Cave consists of three layers of stones, namely lower, middle and upper. The lower and upper layers have hard stones and the middle layer, due to humidity, has soft stones.
When masons of Jahrom discovered this cave, they mined stones from it by using chisel and hammer. They removed stones from the mountain and used them for constructing houses, pillars and mosques.
They were able to create an effective lighting system so that they could cut stone even when they reached the end of the cave. The cave has 13 openings and 100 pillars.
Cultural heritage experts maintain that opportunists exploited stone from the cave illegally, thus weakening the front pillars of the cave, which is likely to lose its sturdiness in future.
Sangshekanan Cave has been registered as national heritage while it lacks tourism facilities. The cave needs the attention of related officials.
In fact, absence of security at this historical site is the main reason for the absence of tourists.
Measures should also be taken for reinforcing it and preventing its destruction. There is no water closet in the vicinity of the cave and the area is in a bad condition in terms of cleanliness.
Sangshekanan Cave is one of the important historical sites of Jahrom and can help boost tourism.
