Tourists visiting historical and cultural sites of Shiraz, Iran’s southwestern province of Fars, increased by 12 percent in the first three months of the current Persian year (starting March 21, 2019), said the head of Iran’s Tourism Organization of Fars Province.
The number of foreign visitors arriving in Iran surged 40.66 percent during spring, which corresponds to the first three months of the current Iranian calendar year, compared with the same period last year, data from the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts, and Tourism Organization showed on Saturday.
Iran’s tourism chief has said the country is developing a dossier for its historical castles and fortresses for a possible inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

UNESCO on Friday designated Iran’s vast Hyrcanian Forest as a World Heritage site, making it the second such Iranian natural site after Lut Desert, which was granted the tag in 2016.
The ruined Gabri fort, which is said to date from Sassanid era, will be turned into an outdoor museum, an official with the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization said on Tuesday.
A total of 208 museums have been established in Iran since President Hassan Rouhani assumed office on August 3, 2013, CHTN reported.
