The ruins of Zaranj ancient city (Or Zarang) which was once the capital of Sistan, is located in the plains alongside the Hamoon Lake. Historical records and documents show that this city in its own time was a thriving and flourishing one, even in the pre- Islamic period. Due to a change in the course of the Hirmand River or its overflow, these inhabited areas have been demolished. However, in the early Islamic era, the city of Zaranj was the capital of Yaqoob Lais and his successors.
